The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the national standards body of India, responsible for setting quality and safety benchmarks for products. If you’re a manufacturer, importer, or brand owner dealing with products that fall under mandatory BIS certification, you must register with BIS before selling in the Indian market.

This guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of BIS registration in India.

Why is BIS Certification Important?

  • Ensures product quality and safety.
  • Builds customer trust and brand credibility.
  • Mandatory for many products (like electrical appliances, toys, electronics, steel, cement, etc.).
  • Non-compliance can lead to penalties and product bans.

Step-by-Step Process of BIS Certification in India

Step 1: Identify the Applicable BIS Scheme

BIS has three main schemes:

  1. ISI Mark Certification – For domestic/foreign manufacturers (mandatory for many products).
  2. CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) – For electronic & IT products.
  3. FMCS (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme) – For foreign manufacturers exporting to India.

Step 2: Prepare the Required Documents

You’ll need:

  • Business registration documents.
  • Manufacturing license/factory documents.
  • List of machinery & process details.
  • Product specifications & test reports.
  • Factory layout & quality control documents.
  • Address proof of manufacturing premises.
  • Indian representative details (for foreign companies).

Step 3: Create an Account on the BIS Portal

  • Visit  www.manakonline.in
  • Sign up as a manufacturer/importer/brand owner.
  • Enter organization and product details.

Step 4: Product Testing in BIS-Recognized Lab

  • Send product samples to a BIS-approved lab.
  • Testing is done as per the relevant Indian Standard (IS code).
  • Collect the official test report.

Step 5: Submit Your Application

  • Log in to the BIS portal.
  • Choose the scheme (ISI / CRS / FMCS).
  • Upload documents + test reports.
  • Pay the required application fee.

Step 6: BIS Scrutiny & Inspection

  • BIS officials review your application.
  • In ISI/FMCS cases, a factory inspection may be done.
  • Clarify discrepancies (if any).

Step 7: Grant of BIS License

  • Once approved, you will receive:
    • ISI Mark License – For standard products.
    • CRS Registration Number – For electronics/IT products.
    • FMCS License – For foreign manufacturers.

Step 8: Renewal of BIS License

  • License validity: 2 years (initially).
  • Renewal requires updated test reports, documents, and fees.

Processing Time

  • CRS Registration: 20–30 days.
  • ISI/FMCS License: 2–6 months (due to inspections).

BIS certification may look like a lengthy process, but it is essential for quality assurance and legal compliance in India. By following the above steps and preparing your documents in advance, you can get your license without unnecessary delays.
