How to Get an IEC (Import Export Code) in India – Step by Step Guide

If you want to start an import-export business in India, the very first requirement is an IEC (Import Export Code). Without this, you cannot legally import or export goods and services. The IEC is issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and is valid for a lifetime.

What is an IEC (Import Export Code)?
IEC (Import Export Code) is a 10-digit number required for importing or exporting goods in India. It is linked with your PAN card and is unique for every business or individual.

Step-by-Step Process to Apply for IEC Online
Step 1: Visit DGFT Website
Go to the official DGFT portal: https://dgft.gov.in
Step 2: Register on DGFT Portal
- Create an account with your PAN, mobile number, and email ID.
- Verify with OTP.
Step 3: Fill IEC Application (ANF-2A Form)
- Log in and click on “Apply for IEC”
- Fill details: Name, PAN, business details, bank details, etc.
Step 4: Upload Documents
- Upload scanned copies of PAN, Aadhaar, bank proof, and address proof.
Step 5: Pay Fees
- Pay the government fee (₹500) online through net banking/UPI/card.
Step 6: Get Your IEC
- Once verified, IEC will be issued in 1–2 working days.
- You can download the e-IEC certificate from DGFT portal.
