The Import Export Code (IEC) is mandatory for anyone looking to start an import-export business in India. Issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), it is required for customs clearance.

  • Valid for lifetime unless canceled.
  • Required for importing and exporting goods.
  • Can be applied online via the DGFT portal.

2. Bill of Lading (B/L)

Issued by the carrier, the Bill of Lading serves as proof of shipment, contract between shipper and carrier, and document of title of goods.

3. Commercial Invoice

A Commercial Invoice is issued by the exporter to the importer, detailing the sale. Key elements include:

  • Description of goods
  • Quantity and price
  • Total value
  • Terms of payment and delivery

The Packing List provides details of how goods are packed for shipping. It includes:

  • Item-wise quantity
  • Dimensions and weight

5. Certificate of Origin (COO)

COO certifies the country of manufacture of goods and is often required by customs in the importing country.

  • Issued by Chamber of Commerce or authorized agencies
  • Preferential COO: For reduced duty under trade agreements
  • Non-preferential COO: Standard certificate

6. Insurance Certificate

Protects shipment against risks like theft, loss, or damage during transit, ensuring financial security.

7. GST Registration & Documents

GST registration is mandatory for exporters and importers. It helps in claiming GST refunds and is required for domestic trade as well.

8. Other Specific Certificates

  • FSSAI License: For food products
  • Phytosanitary Certificate: For plants and agricultural products
  • BIS Certificate: For electronics and manufactured goods
  • Drug License: For pharmaceuticals

9. Letter of Credit (L/C) or Bank Documents

Used in international transactions to secure payment and build trust between buyer and seller.
